So although
Holiday Insights lists March 1st as National Pig Day, they also tell us that there is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a "National" day, which requires an act of Congress.
Still, National Pig Day is celebrated by zoos and perhaps even at fairs and schools, with fun activities that include Pig Outs and Snort Offs. The day was created by a Texas art teacher in 1972 to educate people that pigs are intelligent domestic animals, not dumb, slovenly creatures they are often thought to be.
A pig symbolizes good luck, prosperity, thrift and savings, which is why we have piggy banks. The Pig in Chinese mythology is a symbol of honesty, tolerance, initiative and diligence. German-natives have a saying "
Schwein gehabt" which carries the meaning "Good Luck is at hand". Sir Winston Churchill, one time Prime Minister of England, was quoted as saying: "I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals".
Here’s how
we’ll be celebrating Pig Day:
We’ve got pretty, cute, huggable, funny and even scary
pig costumes – enough for the whole family and lots of friends to wear something different.
We’ve also got a lovely
Miss Piggy costume with dress, ears, glovelets, pearly necklace with Miss Piggy medallion and matching bracelet, for those who like to put pearls ON swine. The nose is not included, but is available in our
accessories section. And for the wee ones, Piglet
from Disney’s Winnie the Pooh. We may even add a little something special – like
wings from our accessories section to show that pigs can fly!
