The Technicolor masterpiece that is the film “The Wizard of Oz” was released in 1939. The grand Hollywood musical-fantasy film was based on the 1900 children’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, and has continued to make an impression. If you need proof, just see the musical film “The Wiz”, the movie “Australia” or the musical “Wicked!” and you’ll understand.
According to
Wikipedia, on September 23, 2009, the film will be re-released in select theaters for a one-night only event in honor of the film's 70th Anniversary. And a 70th Anniversary Edition of the film on DVD will be released on September 29th.
