Costumes for any Reason

Throughout the history of the world, there have been lots of reasons to wear costumes.Tribes have used masks and costumes to invoke nature or fertility deities, medieval royal courts hosted balls to connect to traditions, and during the Renaissance, masquerade balls became popular social events, at times causing quite a scandal.

Today, though kids don’t really need a reason to wear a costume, grown-ups generally do. So aside from Halloween and Cosplay, which we talk about extensively on our blog, here are some other reasons:

Performances: You may be in a company talent show, or part of local theater, or maybe you’re working at the Renaissance Faire or other such event.

Theme parties: Throughout the year, people may throw parties with a certain theme, like a Pirate Beach Party, for example.

Historical Re-enactment: Popular periods to reenact include the Classical periods of Greece and Rome, Medieval, Dark Ages or Renaissance, or battles from The American Revolutionary War, Napoleonic period, The Fur Trade, or World War I or II.

LARPing: Live action role playing is a form of game where the participants physically act out their characters' actions. The fictional genres used vary greatly, from realistic modern or historical settings to fantastic or futuristic eras. LARPs range in size from small private events lasting a few hours to huge public events with thousands of players lasting for days.

Mardi Gras: “Fat Tuesday” Carnival celebrations take place on a big scale in Rio de Janiero in Brazil and New Orleans, Louisiana as well as in Sydney, Australia. But they’re popular around the world and happen in February or March, before Lent and Easter. In Venice, Italy, there was a time when people could spend a large proportion of the year enjoying their masks and costumes, now it’s mostly during Carnival.
